MOCNESS

The MOCNESS (Multiple Opening/Closing Net Environmental Sensing System) was used during DISCOL 3 to sample zooplankton and micronekton. The system carried five nets each with a mesh size of 1800 µm covering a total area of 10 m2. These nets were sequentially opened and closed via a conducting cable. Additionally, each net was equipped with a smaller plankton net with an opening of 30 centimeter and a mesh size of 335 µm to obtain some qualitative information on the smaller organisms the larger zooplankton and micronekton may feed on. Six successful hauls were conducted during SO77 yielding 24 stratified samples with an extra 24 samples from the plankton nets.
